Folding Desks
Poynton Studios.
Project Overview
Develop the shared creative space in Studio 2 of Poynton Studio by creating folding desks that work off of the existing structure of one wall and fit in naturally with the exposed brick and wood floors.
An additional desk was built off a dividing wall designed to better separate the working space from the general seating. The overall result is an aesthetically consistent, cleaner, more comfortable enviroment, and with significantly more floor space when events call for it.
Create a minimally designed folding desk that could be easily secured to the existing beam and floor joists on the brick wall of the building. Client wanted the desk designed in such a way that it was easy to replicate for multiple installs. Scope expanded to include designing a new dividing wall and integrating an additional folding desk.
Levelled and secured vertically via choice placement of framing timber between structural beams and the floor. Each desk is built using 32mm pine, sanded and stained black. The desks themselves use a piano hinge to fold down from back piece of the desk which is finger jointed into the structural framing.
The dividing wall desk uses a similar design, but rather than finger joints it is built solidly into the wall framing.
The initial build of desk 1 was completed with the client, developing the initial design to ensure a repeatable process for desks 2 and 3. Desks 2 and 3 and most of 4 were built by the client off of provided plans. Desk 4 in particular was the most involved of all of them as it required creating a completely framed dividing wall and securing that into the existing structure.
