E-Textile Heart Monitoring Belt

This work involved the development of a novel electrocardiogram (ECG) belt for more accurate ambulatory monitoring in non clinical settings. The work was completed for AUT Biomedical Research group.

This project developed a number of novel technique for embedding functional e-textiles for bio-sensing.

The resulting belt used a clever combination of processes to achieve clinical results; Machine knitted thermoplastic yarns, machine knitted conductive circuity, vacuum formed embossed textile electrodes and over-molded silicone gaskets. all to produce a light weight heart monitoring belt that reduced motion artifacts in bio-signals.

Processes:

Machine knitted thermoplastic yarns to create variable levels of fabric stiffness.

CNC milled steam-moulds for processing thermoplastic yarns into 3D structures for the purpose of over moulding silicone; A thermoset lattice with anchor points and fixed location points for hard to soft interfacing.

CNC milled vacuum form moulds for embossing conductive textile electrodes

Overmoulded silicone gaskets for pre-stretching the skin/reducing motion artifacts in bio-sensing.
